1. Tell us about yourself?
1. I am a 40 year old writer who works at Rainbow Grocery as a cashier. My published works are The IHOP Papers and The Beautifully Worthless. I really enjoy being around animals and listening to baseball games on the radio. I would also like to take a long motorcycle trip. It is a life goal. I would like to ride my motorcycle to the Grand Canyon and back to San Francisco with two guys who work in the freezer at my grocery store. After the trip is over I would sell my motorcycle and count my blessings that I never got in an accident. Until I take the trip I can’t sell my motorcycle.
2. Have you read any good books lately?
2. I really loved Look at Me by Jennifer Egan. In addition, I read both of the late Deborah Digges’ memoirs The Stardust Lounge and Fugitive Spring. I’ve just begun reading Shy by Kevin Killian and am looking forward to Justin Chin’s upcoming work 98 Wounds.
3. Why did you leave your last job?
3. I was a teacher in Oakland and my schedule was 830-1130 AM and 6-9 PM every day. It was a terrible feeling to work this kind of split shift. I thought I could use the middle of the day to write but instead I used it to lay depressed in my bed thinking about going back to the same building I’d already been in in the morning. After six weeks I quit. Now due to budget cuts— the entire program at that school is gone.
4. What have you done to improve your knowledge in the last year?
4. I tried to practice Spanish on Rosetta Stone. I learned what a jujube fruit looks like. Also, I tried to learn the ukelele by watching You Tube videos. I’ve also watched many videos on dog training and ripping up carpet to expose hardwood floors.
5. Tell us about the most fun you have had in life?
5. This is tricky. Not to be all Yoda but, “What is fun?” Here are some highlights:
1. Going on a date at the Madonna Inn in the American Home room that included a 7 foot bathtub.
2. Watching the movie Bridesmaids.
3. Skinny dipping after a Sister Spit show on a rooftop pool in Roxbury, MA.
4. Seeing Polyester for the first time.
5. Riding my old mint green Vespa.
6. Road trips with my belated Dalmatian Rorschach.
7. Miscellaneous drug and alcohol stories that involve youth and stupidity.
